Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the destruction or impairment of dopamine-producing cells.

Standard Parkinson’s disease treatment is symptomatic only. Currently the most effective drug to relieve Parkinson’s symptom contains L-dopa - a substitute for the neurotransmitter dopamine. Drugs containing L-dopa increase dopamine production in the brain for a limited period of time.

Unfortunately, with increased dosages and prolonged use, side effects develop as inconveniently as Parkinson’s symptoms. Patients complain of nausea, confusion, hallucination, dyskenesia (involuntary movements), mood swings and cognitive changes.

Another treatment currently available is the deep brain stimulation (DBS). The DBS procedure requires the installation of electrodes in the brain (via a minimal invasive surgery), which are connected to an IPG (impulse generator - a type of pacemaker). The IPG is implanted bellow the collarbone.

Once activated, the device sends continuous electrical pulses to the target areas in the brain thus blocking the impulses that cause tremors DBS does not guarantee results, and its effect eventually wears off within a period of 5 years.

Background
Beijing

Our partner operates a privately owned hospital, that offers technologically advanced stem cells treatments for an array of neurological disorders. They offer a comprehensive treatment tailored specifically for each patient.  They combine advanced stem cell procedures with extensive rehabilitation and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in order to get the best results possible.

Stem cells treatment for Parkinson’s disease
Six years ago, our partner performed the first hRPE stem cells implantation directly into a Parkinson’s patient brain via a stereotactic brain surgery.

hRPE are human retinal pigment epithelial stem cells, adult multipotent stem cells that are found in the human retina. These cells have the potential to produce dopamine. Based on observations of patients treated throughout the past 6 years were found to be effective in improving Parkinson’s disease patients’ symptoms and quality of life. No long-term negative side effects were noted, and most patients noticed elevation in symptoms at the hospital, while improvements continue further on after finalizing treatment.

The treatment offered at our partner's hospital offers patients a comprehensive program, including primarily Stem Cells therapy (stem cell implantation and related treatments), physiotherapy and complementary traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

The program relies on the stem cells ability to renew and program themselves to form brain tissue. It is based on three interconnected pillars: the stem cells’ regenerating ability, the activation of existing adult stem cells in the individual’s brain and the complementary and therapeutic effect of physiotherapy.

A stereotactic brain injection is the least invasive brain operation. It has very high success rate and is widely used for different medical procedures (also similar to DBS procedure). Since this procedure does involve a certain risk, only patients who are eligible for this procedure in terms of general health, age, stage of disease and risk factors, are accepted for this procedure.

Neural stem cells implantation
Neural stem cells have the potential to develop exclusively into cells of the neural system, making them safe and ideal for neurological disorders treatment. Neural stem cells reach the damaged area in the brain and through contact with the body’s existing chemicals; program themselves to grow into the damaged tissue.

Parkinson’s disease treatment program at our partner's hospital consists of one of the following:

Lumbar Puncture:
A common and safe procedure, performed under local anesthesia. Upon implantation, neural stem cells travel within the Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) directly to the brain. The treatment program includes 4 neural stem cells injections.

Or

Stereotactic brain injection:
A minimally invasive surgical intervention, during which (hRPE) dopamine-producing cells are injected directly into the specific damaged region of the brain. The injection is available only to those who are eligible for the program's strict criteria.

Activation of existing stem cells

In addition to the stem cell implantation, a group of neurotrophic factors are administered daily to each Parkinson’s disease patient who undergoes treatment in our partner's hospital. The nutrients nourish the brain and stimulate the brain’s existing stem cells into proliferation and multiplication. The nutrients also enhance the migration of the stem cells to the necessary areas and provide a perfect microenvironment for the cells.

Our partner's hospital has its own stem cell laboratory, where all cells are checked for genetic mutations and an array of diseases (HIV and Hepatitis, etc.). Apart from cells cleanliness, the laboratory on site also assures freshness of the cells provided at the highest level.

Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy (PT) helps develop, maintain and restore movement and functions lost to the disease. Physiotherapy also triggers the new stem cells into becoming functional, thus aiding stem cell implantation. Our partner's hospital has a PT area where patients benefit from daily therapy sessions with experienced professionals.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Originated in China, Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, traditional Chinese massage and herbal treatments) is effective in treating a very wide range of neurological disorders. As an alternative form of healing, it combines illness prevention as well as maintenance of general well being, while, providing drug-free pain relief, also improves blood circulation and digestion problems.

Hailing from a long and outstanding tradition of natural healing, practitioners at our partner's hospital employ a special program designed for patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease, aiming to strengthen and balance their general health condition, immune system, and organ functions.

Treatment Program and Length of Stay

Our treatment program for Parkinson’s disease requires a 3-4 weeks stay in the hospital, which includes stem cell implantations, a daily IV of medications, daily physiotherapy, occupational therapy and TCM treatments, accommodation for the patient and 2 family members, daily doctor’s visits and a personal costumer service representative’s services.
